Way back waypoint markers

These small stone towers dot the Icelandic landscape, and seemingly lead off to nowhere. Yet, long before good maps or GPS, they serverd as ancient waypoint markers for Icealnders to traverse the country without getting lost – especially when the snow was covering the ground. These cairns (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairn) have been used around the world for millenia, and I found them most striking here.

Free range sheep amidst moutains

The sheep in Icleand all seem to be outside the fences. But, as we were told, the fences are actually only there to keep the sheep OUT of the crop fields. As the summer growing season is quite short compared to North America, the crops are critical. The sheep on the other hand get to roam freely up to the mountains and back all summer long.
